Tried&True
“Shared Wisdom Through Shared Experience”
Heartbeat of Tried&True
Many men are lonelier than ever. We’re no longer presented with hard physical challenges, and
for many, the lust for adventure is lost. Men used to do hard things together. Days spent in the
wilderness hunting and providing for their families have been replaced by business trips where
we eat, sit, and talk for hours about things no one really cares about. We numb ourselves with
drinking and more sitting while we binge on soul-sucking entertainment. We’ve lost the skills to
teach and reach our children. We’re not leading our families; we’re following society’s lead.
Simple skills like tying knots, fishing, making a fire, or planning an adventure—things we used
to teach our children—are forgotten. We show up to fake grass fields to join overprotective
parents hovering over coaches, all wanting their children to be number one.
We’re dying.
We’re lethargic.
We’re unchallenged.
We’re safe.
We’re lost.
We all feel it.
Tried&True is meant to wake men up. It’s designed to be a shared experience where timeless
wisdom is shared among men. It’s a camp where no man is alone, but each is doing tough
inner work while engaging in tough activities alongside other men. It’s the toughest competition
they’ll ever find themselves in—a competition not against other men but against the man they
are and the man they want to become. Tried&True gives them the chance to enter that
competition alongside brothers who are there for the same purpose.
The Four Pillars of Tried&True
1. Curious Faith
We’ve lost the God-sized wonder of our boyhood. Worse, we went to church and were told not
to ask questions, just to believe what the preacher said. We need to rediscover our curiosity
and wonder about our relationship with God. We need to ask the tough questions and trust
that God can handle them. We need to go deep.
2. Safe Family
As fathers (and fathers to be), we should create a safe space for our children to grow and for
our wives to be loved and cared for. We should seek to protect them at all costs. Our homes
should be a safe haven because humans flourish in safety. As fathers, we should plan ahead,
even in times of change, to ensure we maintain a safe space. We need to initiate safe
conversations to grow our love for our families and be the safe refuge our children run to.
3. Adventure Fitness
It’s not about being the fastest or the strongest; it’s about being able to get up and go when life
calls. It’s about being able to throw a football, cheer at a soccer game, or carry our children
when needed. It’s about being able to answer the call when friends say, “Let’s go have fun,”
without being left gasping for breath or unable to keep up.
4. Generous Finance
We are all concerned with finance. We know we have to do what it takes to provide for our
families, never running from financial conflict but facing it head-on to make the situation better.
But we also need to lead in our generosity. As men of God, while we often desire to save,
preserve, and plan, we also need to model generosity. Ultimately, the richest man in the room is
the one with the deepest relationship with God, not the deepest pockets. We desire to be
God’s channel of provision and blessing to those around us.

“I’ve led quite a journey during my career as an Ironman Athlete. At 25 years old – and just
starting my first couple months in the sport of triathlon – I found myself in an accident where I
broke nearly every bone in my foot and ankle. From that moment on – my journey toward
understanding my purpose in life shifted. I understood the importance of surrendering myself
to something greater and giving my best at everything for God. After a faith-fueled recovery, I
went on to win multiple titles at the 2002 Ironman Wisconsin, 2005 Ironman Canada, and 2006
Ironman Japan triathlons – resulting in my proudest performance of placing 2nd at the 2009
Ironman World Championships.
This journey in life has been one filled with experiences, successes, failures, and struggles –
and through that – I have learned to value every step of the way and focus on Jesus being by
my side.
My goal now is to share my experiences and help the experiences and the lives of others
through my work. I want to both teach and learn from others to help us grow, succeed, push
through, rise up, take responsibility, challenge ourselves, and all in all, be who God intended
and desires us to be.”
